Course Description:
Clinical training
in restorative dentistry procedures, including diagnostic,
treatment planning, therapeutic aspects of operative
dentistry, bleaching procedures, fixed prosthodontics, occlusal
analysis and treatment emphasizing multidisciplinary coordination,
and writing appropriate Rx’s for commercial laboratories.
Educational Objectives:
Students will treat
all assigned patients comprehensively, with the expectation
that they manage all modalities of patient care, to include
restorative dentistry. The student will gain knowledge, skills,
experience, and ethical values in the restoration of diseased
teeth, defective and failing restorations, and missing teeth.
The objectives are for the student to be able to: (1) diagnose
dental caries and to determine that which constitutes a failing
restoration requiring replacement, (2) design comprehensive
treatment plans to address the restorative needs and desires
of the dental patient in conjunction with their overall dental
health needs, (3) prepare teeth for appropriate operative
procedures and restoration with appropriate materials, (4)
prepare teeth, take impressions, communicate with commercial
dental laboratories, and place appropriate fixed prosthodontic
restorations, (5) diagnose occlusal discrepancies and be able
to perform appropriate occlusal treatment, (7) provide elective
esthetic procedures to include bleaching, (8) be familiar
with the diagnostic and clinical procedures necessary for
the restoration of a dental implant.

Course Expectations:
The following is a
summary of suggested minimal cumulative goals for achievement
in 3rd year clinical restorative dentistry. All procedures
completed during the 3rd year in RES D 630 and ResD635 will
be credited toward 4th year minimum suggested goals. These
goals will generally be met though a combination of comprehensive
patient care and efficient use of clinic sessions.
Examination/Grading Policies: Grades will be given at the end
of Summer Quarter based upon a cumulative composite of the
following four factors:
- Clinic Sessions (attendance): 30%
- Restorative Points (quantitative): 30%
- Daily Faculty Grade (qualitative): 30%
- Course Director Evaluation: 10%
- Competency
Examinations are not separately graded, but successful
completion of all three examinations
is required for graduation. Students will be given
a progress report at the end of each quarter.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result
in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
