RESD 620: Introduction to Clinical Restorative Dentistry

Course Description:

Orientation to clinical operations, administrative procedures associated with the restorative clinic, initial comprehensive and limited treatment plan of patients. Review local anesthesia administration, rubber dam application, alginate impression technique and bleaching tray fabrication.

Educational Goals/Objectives:

The student will gain knowledge in the principles of comprehensive restorative treatment planning. The objectives are for the student to be able to (1) establish a restorative treatment plan appropriate to the needs of each patient, (2) formulate a treatment plan in association with other dental specialties, (3) provide antibiotic coverage for infection encountered during the examination, (4) make and interpretation of radiographs to adequately assess the dental needs of each patient, and (5) make impressions and fabricate diagnostic casts on appropriate patients. Start to gather information for a Comprehensive Care Patient Presentation.

Course Expectations:

Students are expected to attend lectures and clinic exercises on Mondays from 8:00 to 12:30 AM. It is optional for students to take notes. Students will be required to complete at least three combined treatment plans for patients in perio, pros and restorative dentistry. The clinic sessions will start on the 5 th week from 1:30 – 4:00 PM Monday to Thursday. Students are required to assist at least three clinical sessions with an upper classmate during the Summer Quarter.

Absence needs to be justified through the dental School Student Services office.

Students are required to demonstrate her/his understanding of the lecture topics and supplemental readings from Dr. Schwedhelm Treatment Planning Website.

To successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student must satisfactorily design a restorative treatment plan (RESD, PROS and PERIO) for at least three patients in conjunction with a periodontal treatment examination, attend lectures, anesthesia/rubber dam exercise, diagnostic alginate impression taking, bleaching tray fabrication and to demonstrate her/his understanding of the lecture topics and supplemental readings through a final examination. Students are also required to assist upper classmates for at least 3 sessions.

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
