RESD 542: New Developments in Dental Materials

Glen Johnson / 1 Credit / Quarter 15 (Spring, Fourth Year)

Course Description:

This course provides the senior dental student with recent information on the new dental products available to the practicing dentist. The purpose of the course is to provide information which will allow the student to rank products as to clinical viability, for use when they are in dental practice. This ranking procedure is developed from information published in the scientific dental literature.

Educational Objectives:

The student in this class will gain knowledge on new restorative products, and will also become aware of the current available literature. The objectives require the student to:

  1. Know what additional products are available in a specific category
  2. Know where to find information on these products in the dental literature
  3. Know the chemistry of each classification
  4. Know the recent literature relating to each product category
  5. Know why certain products or techniques may provide a more successful clinical end result
  6. Know the role of each chemical component in a product, and the reason the manufacturer has included this in the chemistry or package.

Course Outline:

The course outline changes from year to year. At the beginning of the quarter, the class is asked to suggest topics which they feel further discussion. In this they are asking for information which has not been made available in prior classes in the dental school. Also, by asking for their input, the class is made more effective in providing information they feel is needed. Typically however, the course covers information on products available from the dental manufacturers, with emphasis on published information. Topics which are asked for on a yearly basis are dental composites, dental adhesives, impression materials, the newer dental ceramics, the newer dental cements, with questions relating to computer systems for the dental office, machinable ceramic restorations, and intraoral video systems. Where possible lectures are scheduled on these topics, but if time is not available, recent published information is made available to the class.

Course Expectations:

The student is required to attend all lectures and presentations, participate in question and answer periods during lecture, and complete evaluations on products currently used in the Dental School.

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
