Course Description:
Lecture/laboratory
dealing with the goal of creating an idealized smile, enhancing
the esthetic appearance and form of human dentition, and also
achieve optimal function. Restorative procedures to create
lifelike prosthodontics that mimic the appearance of natural
teeth. Incorporates simple adjunctive procedures for multidisciplinary
treatment to improve restorative outcomes. Students are introduced
to proper technique, materials and case selection to maximize
clinical success.
Educational Objectives:
The
student will gain knowledge in comprehensive dental esthetics.
The objectives will be for the student to be able to (1) describe
the elements of an esthetic smile, (2) understand how variations
in color, size and shape affect esthetic perception, (3) conduct
proper case selection and decide when esthetic procedures
are indicated, (4) select the appropriate treatment based
on the clinical situation and patient factors, (5) discuss
the differences, strengths and limitations of various esthetic
materials and the concepts of direct and indirect restorations,
and (6) apply the principles required for modified preparation
design and adhesive techniques.
Course Outline:
Lecture
topics include: esthetic analysis, treatment planning and
case selection; bleaching; materials selection and indications;
composites – direct and indirect; maximizing esthetics for
fixed, removable and implant prosthodontics; ceramics for
veneers, inlays and onlays; clinical case reports, case management
and problem solving; orthodontics/periodontics; and esthetic
technology.
Lab
projects include: class IV composite preparation and restoration;
composite veneer preparation and restoration; ceramic veneer
temporization and cementation; indirect composite preparation,
fabrication and cementation.

Course Expectations:
To
successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student
is expected to attend lectures and laboratories and demonstrate
her/his understanding of the lecture topics and laboratory
skills through laboratory projects, midterm and final case
studies, and midterm and final lecture examinations. This
includes the ability to develop a comprehensive esthetic treatment
plan on an assigned case to demonstrate restoration of dentition
using appropriate direct, indirect and adjunctive esthetic
procedures.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result
in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
