RESD 530-531: Restorative Dentistry

Course Description:

A two-quarter lecture series related to RESD 630 (clinic) presenting restorative dentistry principles, including supportive material on clinical procedures.

Educational Objectives:

The student will gain knowledge in the concepts of operative dentistry and fixed prosthodontic restorations. The objectives will be for the student to understand (1) treatment planning decisions, (2) periodontal considerations, (3) preparation design variations, (4) provisional restorations, (5) impression procedures, (6) occlusal records, (7) adjustment and (8) cementation of crowns and bridges. Students will also become proficient in written and oral communication with commercial dental laboratories. Students will learn the rationale for the selection and application of dental material currently utilized with the dental clinic.

Course Outline:

Lecture topics include: general sequence of procedure for posterior crown operations; periodontal considerations in fixed prosthodontic treatment; clinical examination and charting of occlusion; general clinical procedures; treatment planning posterior crowns; foundation build-up procedures; posterior and anterior crown preparation; temporary protection for crown preparations; retraction/deflection of gingival tissue for impressions; impression procedures; centric inter-occlusal records and mounting procedures; pre-clinical and clinical fitting and adjusting procedures; and cementation of crowns and bridges. Further topics include: clinical management of posterior bridges; treatment simulation by diagnostic waxing; abutment, retainer and pontic design; draw and path of insertion considerations; complications of tipped and supra-erupted teeth; vital bleaching of teeth; restoration of endodontically treated teeth; RPD surveyed crowns and bridges; cantilevers, non-rigid connectors and double-abutments; indexing and soldering bridge units; and commercial dental laboratory utilization.

Course Expectations:

To successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student is expected to attend lectures and to demonstrate her/his understanding of the lecture topics and supplemental readings through a midterm and a final examination.

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
