RESD 525: Fixed Prosthodontics

Xavier Lepe and John Townsend / 3 Credits / Quarter 5 (Autumn, Second Year)

Course Description:

This course serves as introduction to the area of restorative dentistry dealing with indirect complete coverage restorations. The discipline of fixed prosthodontics is introduced with lectures and reading references related to the topics of terminology, principles of tooth preparation, clinical procedures relevant to this preclinical course and laboratory technology. Preclinical experience is provided in tooth preparation, provisional restoration, and fabrication of various crown designs. Projects emphasize the various designs of single tooth preparation and restoration.

Educational Objectives:

The student will gain knowledge in the principles of fixed prosthodontics for the restoration of damaged tooth surfaces with metal and/or esthetic veneer restorations. The objectives will be for the student to be able to (1) define the procedures for tooth preparation, (2) properly prepare the tooth to receive single crowns, (3) define the procedures for fabrication of single crowns, and (4) perform indirect fabrication of crowns.

Course Outline:

Lecture topics include: course description; terminology; tooth preparation for complete veneer crowns (CVCs), principles of tooth preparation; clinical examples of CVCs; impressions and working casts in fixed prosthodontics; tooth preparation for esthetic veneer crowns (EVCs); working dies; mounting casts; waxing; investing; dental casting procedures; fit and finish of a cast restoration; tooth preparation for partial veneer crowns (PVCs); and single unit provisional restorations.

Assessment of Competency:

To successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student is expected to attend lectures and laboratory sessions, complete all laboratory projects and to demonstrate her/his knowledge of the lecture and assigned reading material through quizzes, midterm and final written examinations as well as demonstrate skills through simulated clinical and laboratory projects and practical examinations.  Students must pass all tooth preparation practical examinations with 70% or greater.  Practical examinations include both faculty and student self evaluations with recognition for closeness between faculty and student marks.

Course Requirements:

Attend eight, two-hour lectures, read selected references related to each topic and pass a mid-term (essay format) and final (multiple-choice format) written examination.

  • practice preparing dentoform teeth for four different designs of indirect restorations using evaluation criteria for reference, manual instructions, and faculty instruction for guidance; subsequent to the skill development for each preparation design, a timed, clinically simulated, competency practical examination must be successfully completed with a grade of 70% or greater.

  • attend ten, five-hour laboratory sessions and complete several clinically simulated projects at a satisfactory level.

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course.  Failure to comply will result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.

Competencies Addressed/Assurance of Competencies:

Students are judged competent to proceed to the second quarter of preclinical fixed prosthodontics when they have successfully completed the following:

  • two written examinations judging student’s knowledge of fixed prosthodontics, associated disciplines and dental laboratory technology
  • four tooth preparation competency practical examinations
  • completion of various individual indirect restorations at a clinically acceptable level
