Course Description:
Introduces processes of restoring diseased or
damaged tooth structure to proper health, form, function, and
esthetics. Emphasis on basic principles of cavity preparation,
preparation and restoration design, proper selection and use of
restorative materials, and clinical considerations for
restorative treatment planning. Following demonstration of
competence in didactic and practical aspects. Limited
opportunity available for introduction to restorative care. This
course continues instruction in processes of restoring diseased
or damaged tooth structure to proper health, form, function, and
esthetics. Emphasis on basic principles of cavity preparation,
preparation and restoration design, proper selection and use of
restorative materials, and clinical considerations for
restorative treatment planning.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain
knowledge in the basic principles of operative dentistry.
The objectives will be for the student to be able to (1) prepare
a tooth for an MOD inlay and insert and finish the restoration,
(2) prepare a tooth for a Class 2 inlay/onlay and insert and
finish the restoration, (3) prepare a Class 2 ceramic/composite
inlay and insert and finish the restoration, (4) prepare teeth
for veneers and finish one veneer restoration, (5) know the
indication for the placement of a temporary restoration and
finish two temporary restorations. The student will gain knowledge
in the (6) the design, preparation, and placement of complex
amalgam and composite restorations.

Course Outline:
Lecture topics include:
Class 5 direct inlay - dentoform; cast pins; Class 5 amalgam
preparation and insertion; Class 5 inlay finishing; Class 5
composite, glass ionomer; Class 2 composite; Class 2 amalgam
preparation tooth #3 MO and #30MOD; Class 2 amalgam matrix,
insertion; polish and finish amalgams.
Course Expectations:
To successfully meet
the requirements of this course, the student is required to
attend lectures and laboratories and to demonstrate his/her
understanding of the lecture topics and supplemental reading
and his/her technical skills through seven quizzes, one midterm,
one final examination, laboratory assignments, and one midterm
and final laboratory examination. To successfully meet the
requirements of this course, the student is expected to attend
lectures and laboratory sessions and demonstrate his/her understanding
of the lecture topics and supplemental readings through one
written examination and his/her clinical skills through three
practical examinations and daily projects.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result
in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
