Course Description:
Introduces processes of restoring diseased or
damaged tooth structure to proper health, form, function and
esthetics. Emphasis on basic principles of cavity preparation,
preparation and restoration design, proper selection and use of
restorative materials and clinical considerations for
restorative treatment planning. Emphasis will be on one surface
restorations.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain knowledge in operative
dentistry techniques. The objectives will be for the student
to
be able to: (1) satisfactorily isolate all areas to be restored
by the use of rubber dam, (2) demonstrate an acceptable understanding
of the basic principles of operative dentistry, (3) demonstrate
proper finger rests and force control using hand instruments
and handpieces, (4) acceptably prepare occlusal, facial and
lingual cavities using established principles of cavity preparation
receiving necessary assistance, (5) acceptably restore prepared
cavities with amalgam, inlay, resin composite and glass ionomer
materials receiving necessary assistance, (6) demonstrate
the preparation and ability to perform basing and luting
procedures and (7) prepare and restore single surface cavities
without faculty assistance.
Course Outline:
Lecture topics include: causes of tooth
destruction; cavity classification; review of instrumentation;
rubber dam applications; principles of cavity preparation;
cavity terminology; amalgam cavity preparations, material,
trituration, condensation, carving and polishing; inlays Class 1
(occlusal) applications, technique, investing, casting; fitting
and preparing castings, cementation and polish; resin composite
and glass ionomers materials, cavity preparation, conditioning,
priming, insertion, curing, contouring and finishing. |
Course Expectations:
To successfully meet
the requirements of this course, the student is expected to
attend lectures and laboratories and to demonstrate her/his
understanding of the lecture topics and laboratory instruction
through weekly quizzes, twenty-four projects, two written
examinations, two timed exercises and three practical examinations.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will
result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
