Course Description:
This lecture series introduces concepts of
operative dentistry to first year dental students. Nomenclature,
cavity classification, instrumentation, pulp protection, and
principles of cavity preparation are presented and discussed.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain knowledge in the
terminology and concepts of operative dentistry. The objectives
will be for the student to:
- Be
familiar with the etiology and preventive aspects of caries
- Be familiar with the
tools available for caries detection and understand the
difference between caries detection
and caries
diagnosis
- Be familiar with caries management by risk
assessment
- Learn operative terminology
- Learn the principles
of cavity preparation
- Learn the indications and technique
for placement of pit and fissure sealants and preventive
resin restorations
(PRR)
Course Outline:
Lecture topics include: an introduction to
operative dentistry, dental terminology, armamentarium-hand and
rotary instruments, principles of cavity preparation, dental
materials/cavity design, and isolation techniques and connective
tissue considerations. |
Course Expectations:
To successfully meet
the requirements of this course, the student is expected to
attend lectures and to demonstrate his/her understanding of
the lecture topics and supplemental readings through daily
quizzes, a practical midterm examination, and a final written
examination.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will
result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
