Course Description:
A
two quarter prelinical/clinical course dealing with the basic
principles of complete denture fabrication as well as the
diagnosis and treatment of a completely edentulous patient.
This is the clinical component of the lecture course PROS
520 which is given in the same quarter and followed in Quarter
6 as a continuation of the clinical. A pair of students is
assigned one complete denture (CD/CD) patient. The student
receives a grade at the end of the second quarter.
Educational Objectives:
The
student will gain knowledge in the diagnosis and treatment
of the completed, edentulous patient. The objectives will
be for the student to be able to (1) describe and perform
the clinical and laboratory steps required to fabricate a
complete denture, (2) identify normal and abnormal edentulous
anatomy and its relationship to complete denture fabrication,
(3) manipulate the dental materials necessary to fabricate
a complete denture and (4) describe the typical problems that
can occur during complete denture construction and, after
complete dentures are placed, be able to solve the same.
Course Outline:
Preclinical: Laboratory
exercises include: construction of custom trays, record bases
and occlusion rims; arrangment of denture teeth; waxing denture
contours; and finishing and polishing dentures.
Clinical: Each pair
of students treats one complete denture patient.
Clinic
schedule: Tuesday morning, Tuesday afternoon and Friday morning. |
Course Expectations:
To
successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student
must demonstrate his/her knowledge and technical skills to
complete a maxillary and mandibular denture in a patient.
The student is evaluated on alginate impressions, diagnostic
casts, custom impression tray design, final impressions, master
casts, denture set ups on articulators, finished dentures,
adverse tissue responses and other relevant items. The student
is also assessed by his/her knowledge and performance on two
competency examinations during the last three weeks of the
winter quarter for PROS 620 in the following areas: (1) fabricate
record bases and occlusion rims and (2) position artificial
teeth and wax dentures to a full contour. The student receives
a grade at the end of the second quarter.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will
result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
