PROS 520: Introduction to Complete Dentures

Course Description:

Lecture course that covers the basic principles of complete (conventional) denture fabrication, as well as diagnosis and treatment of a completely edentulous patient. This is the lecture portion of PROS 620 which is the clinical component of the course.

Educational Objectives:

The student will gain knowledge in the basic principles of complete dentures. The objectives are for the student to be able to (1) describe and perform the clinical and laboratory steps required to fabricate a complete denture, (2) identify normal and abnormal edentulous anatomy and its relationship to complete denture fabrication, (3) manipulate the dental materials necessary to fabricate a complete denture and (4) describe the typical problems that can occur during complete denture construction and, after complete dentures are placed, be able to solve the same.

Course Outline:

Lecture topics include: edentulous anatomy, the construction of impression trays and occlusion rims, positioning artificial teeth and waxing denture contours, preparing the mouth for complete dentures, preliminary edentulous impressions, tissue conditioning, pouring and trimming casts, final maxillary and mandibular impressions, boxing the final impression, pouring and trimming master cast, tooth selection, maxillo-mandibular relations, facebows, articulators, factors of articulation, denture occlusion, clinical try-in of dentures, denture esthetics, processing, and polishing of dentures, resilient denture bases, insertion of dentures, occlusal adjustment and problem solving.-

Course Expectations:

To successfully complete this course, the student is expected to attend lectures and demonstrate understanding of the lecture topics and reading assignments through written quizzes and a final examination.

Effective Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation is a requirement of this course.  Failure to comply will result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
