Course Description:
A four quarter sequence: clinical practice of
minor oral and maxillofacial surgery.
*This rotation is offered multiple
quarters. Each student enrolls and receives credit for three
quarters.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain knowledge in the
principles of minor oral surgery. The objectives will be for the
student to be able to (1) examine and evaluate a patient
presenting with a surgical problem, (2) identify and record oral
surgical problems presented by the patient, (3) appropriately
sequence oral and maxillofacial surgical care in the overall
treatment plan and perform basic surgical procedures, (4)
recognize when it is appropriate to refer patients to an oral
and maxillofacial surgeon for care, (5) interpret the results of
the physical evaluation and understand the findings that will
alter and influence dental treatment, (6) discuss findings,
diagnoses, and treatment options with the patient and to obtain
informed consent, and be able to explain the sequencing of oral
surgical care to the patient as it relates to the overall
treatment plan, (7) competently control patients' pain and
anxiety through the use of local anesthesia (nitrous oxide), (8)
develop confidence, respect, and trust in the patient-care
relationship, (9) competently diagnose and treat complications
resulting from minor surgical procedures, (10) write
prescriptions and understand the use of prescription drugs in
the practice of minor oral surgery, (11) assess the urgency of a
patient's needs as regards the application of the principles of
oral surgery, and (12) perform the following procedures:
uncomplicated extraction of single or multi-rooted, non-impacted
teeth; uncomplicated removal of fractured or residual root tips;
uncomplicated pre-prosthetic surgery; uncomplicated biopsy of
soft tissues; management of uncomplicated infections of dental
origin; and assessment of the status of impacted teeth and know
the indications and contraindications for their removal.
Course Outline:
Students are assigned to oral surgery blocks
in the winter and spring of their junior year and in either the
summer or autumn of their senior year.

Course
Expectations:
To successfully meet
the requirements of this course, the student is expected to
attend clinic sessions and pre- and post-clinical conferences
and to demonstrate his/her understanding of the assigned reading
through quizzes and a written test each quarter. The student
is also to give two assigned presentations per quarter.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result
in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
