Course Description:
This course is designed to survey the
specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Sub-specialists
present lectures outlining the scope of the specialty. Topics
include: pre-prosthetic surgery, surgical care of oral and
maxillofacial pathology, treatment of injuries of the trigeminal
nerve, pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, oral and
maxillofacial trauma, pain and anxiety control, physical
evaluation of oral surgery patients, and bone grafting.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain knowledge in the
principles of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The objectives
will be for the student to be able to (1) recognize diseases,
deformities, injuries, and abnormalities treated by oral and
maxillofacial surgeons, (2) refer patients with dental and
maxillofacial problems beyond the scope of a general dental
practitioner to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, (3) know the
basic indications and contraindications of the basic procedures
performed by the oral and maxillofacial surgeon, (4) know the
common methods of pain and anxiety control available from the
oral and maxillofacial surgeon, and (5) know the indications for
referral of patients with pain and anxiety to the oral and
maxillofacial surgeon.
Course Outline:
Lecture topics include: introduction to oral
and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS); pain and anxiety management in
OMFS; introduction to OMFS trauma; disorders of the TMJ;
pre-prosthetic surgery; introduction to orthognathic surgery;
oral and maxillofacial infections; pediatric OMFS; oral and
maxillofacial pathology, implants, and principles of treatment
or trigeminal nerve injury.

Course
Expectations:
To successfully meet
the requirements of this course, the student is expected to
attend lectures and read the syllabus and handouts and demonstrate
her/his understanding of the lectures through a written test
during the tenth week of each quarter.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result
in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
