Course Description:
Clinical-pathologic
conference/seminar stressing clinical findings of various
oral lesions through exploration of etiology, pathogenesis,
histopathology, and treatment modalities for oral pathology
cases drawn from files of the Division of Oral Pathology.
Educational Objectives:
The
student will gain knowledge in the principles of diagnosing
lesions of the oral cavity and supporting bone. The objectives
will be for the student to be able to (1) develop a differential
diagnosis for an oral lesion based on a clinical history and
findings, (2) reach a definitive diagnosis based on the histopathology
of the lesion, (3) list the clinical features that formed
the basis for their differential diagnosis, (4) describe the
important histopathologic features that formulate the basis
of their final diagnosis, and (5) list additional diagnostic
aids to help in the diagnosis and treatment of a specific
oral lesion and, (6) understand the professionalism and ethics
of referral of a patient for biopsy and the responsiblity
for follow-up of that patient.
Course Outline:
Lecture
on the legal responsibility of dentists in recognizing, diagnosing
and treatment of oral disease, the diagnostic technique and
principals of biopsy, discussion of two of the 28 assigned
cases per session as well as one unknown current case from
the Oral Pathology Biopsy Service and review of common oral
lesions. The diagnoses and treatments are evidence based.
Ethnic/gender variation of disease is discussed where appropriate.
A panel discussion with representatives from general practice,
Endodontics, Periodontics and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
discuss criteria and procedures for referral of an oral lesion
for biopsy. This discussion includes the professionalism and
ethics of referral of a patient for biopsy and the responsibility
for follow-up in the patient’s care.

their workup on the assigned cases, and submit a final diagnosis
on each in class unknown.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will result
in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
