Course Description:
A clinical course where the student is
required to complete endodontic treatment of anterior, premolar,
and molar teeth. In addition to nonsurgical treatment of several
endodontic cases, the student assists with an endodontic
surgery.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain
knowledge and experience in endodontic treatment. The objectives
are for the student to be able to (1) differentiate between
signs and symptoms caused by pulpal or periapical pathosis
and those caused by other forms of orofacial pathosis, (2)
determine the cause of pulpal or periapical pathosis, select
and carry out appropriate treatment, and estimate the prognosis,
(3) complete, at a clinically acceptable level, those clinical
procedures which are consistent with her/his experience level,
(4) identify those factors which affect the complexity of
treatment in each endodontic case and distinguish between
those cases which are within her/his ability to manage effectively
and those which should be referred to practitioners who can
more appropriately provide for the care of the patient, and
(5) accurately critique completed clinical procedures.
Further, the student
will (6) understand the standards of care associated with
endodontic treatment as well as his/her professional and ethical
obligations to patients with endodontic needs.
Course
Outline:
Seven
quarters of endodontic clinic.
Course
Expectations:
To
successfully meet the requirements of this course, the student
is required to complete at least seven quarters of ENDO 630,
to successfully fill a minimum of fifteen root canals, including
two molar teeth, and to assist with one surgery in the Graduate
Endodontics Clinic. Students are required to pass two clinical
competency exams. The 3rd year clinical competency exam
(a single-canal tooth) is required to progress to the 4th
year Endodontic Clinic. The 4th year clinical competency exam
(a posterior multi-canal tooth) is required for clearance
for graduation. Both competency exam cases count toward the
required endodontic clinical experience.
