ENDO 534: Clinical Procedures in Endodontics

Course Description:

Lecture course covering clinical endodontic procedures, including diagnosis, clinical techniques (use of electronic apex locators, radiography, rubber dam, and local anesthesia), restoration of endodontically-treated teeth, endodontic emergencies, procedural accidents, and case selection and referral.

Educational Objectives:

The student should be able to: 1) accurately perform endodontic diagnostic tests and formulate correct pulpal and periradicular diagnoses; 2 ) solve basic problems in endodontic radiography, rubber dam isolation, and achieving local anesthesia; 3) diagnose and plan treatment for endodontic emergencies; 4) understand principles of restoration of endodontically-treated teeth; 5) identify endodontic procedural accidents and preventive measures; and 6) assess endodontic case difficulty level and recognize the basis for referral to a specialist.

Course Outline:

Lecture topics include: clinic orientation; endodontic diagnosis; electronic apex locators; endodontic radiography; rubber dam isolation in endodontic treatment; local anesthesia for endodontic treatment; restoration of endodontically-treated teeth; endodontic emergencies and therapeutics; procedural accidents; and case selection and basis for referral.

Course Expectations:

To successfully meet the requirements of this course the student is expected to attend lectures and to demonstrate an understanding of the lecture topics and readings through quizzes and a final examination.

UWSOD Competency 1: Examine a patient using contemporary diagnostic methods to evaluate the head and neck region and to reach a diagnosis of the patient’s oral and craniofacial health status.

UWSOD Competency 6: Manage acute and chronic orofacial and dental pain.
