Course Description:
The first of a two-quarter course that is a
survey of the diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region in
lecture and laboratory format. Among the conditions discussed
are diseases of teeth and their supporting structures, diseases
of oral epithelium including oral cancer, chronic
immune-mediated cutaneous and mucosal diseases and other oral
soft tissue diseases including the salivary gland tissue. In
addition, oral manifestations of infectious diseases including
sexually transmitted diseases will be covered. Correlations
between clinical findings, etiologic factors, and
histopathologic features are stressed. Attendance in both the
laboratory and lectures is required.
Educational Objectives:
The student will gain knowledge of various
diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region. The main
objectives of this course are for the student to (1) identify
Oral & Maxillofacial disease pathogenesis (2) recognize and
detect Oral & Maxillofacial diseases (3) correlate the
histopathology with the clinical presentation of a disease (4)
investigate Oral & Maxillofacial clinical problems and reach a
working differential diagnosis (5) appropriately manage & treat
diseases within the scope of a general practitioner (6) refer
Oral & Maxillofacial diseases which are beyond the scope of a
general practitioner (7) be able to describe how to handle a
Pathology Specimen including the type of fixative, packaging,
shipping, and the filling of a Pathology Request form and (8) be
able to interpret a pathology report using histopathology
descriptive terms.
Course Outline:
Lecture topics include:
developmental/congenital conditions; epithelial diseases
including oral cancer; soft tissue lesions; immune-mediated
mucocutaneous diseases; salivary gland lesions; sexually
transmitted diseases/AIDS; and infectious diseases of the oral
cavity; oral manifestation of systemic diseases; odontogenic
neoplasms; adverse effects of medicinal substances; oral cysts;
and bone pathology. |
Course Expectations:
To successfully meet
the requirements of this course, the student is expected to
attend lectures and laboratory sessions and to demonstrate
understanding of the lecture topics, supplemental readings,
and laboratory cases. This achieved through weekly quizzes
of unknown cases, weekly unknown three case reports, weekly
unknown case presentations, independent study of a web page
containing 240 unknown cases, and midterm and final examinations.
Effective
Winter Quarter 2007, completion of on-line course evaluation
is a requirement of this course. Failure to comply will
result in an "Incomplete" grade being assigned.
