Scope of Practice

The scope of this specialty includes, but not restricted to, the aspects of diagnosis, treatment and maintenance of periodontal disease(s) [commonly known as gum diseases] and in periodontal plastic surgery for regenerating gingival tissues. Bone preservation and bone argumentation procedures, during / after extraction(s) of teeth will be undertaken. Problems related to chronic long term loss of teeth and other complex bone and soft tissue augmentation procedures related to periodontal / dental implant procedures will be undertaken. Multi-faceted inter-disciplinary treatment modalities related to dental implant dentistry will be incorporated through a comprehensive dental care plan through other relevant disciplines of advanced clinical dentistry.

Dr. Flemmig earned his dental degree at the University of Freiburg, Germany and received training in Oral Surgery at the University of Hamburg and in Periodontics at the University of California, Los Angeles, CA (UCLA). He holds a Dr. med. dent. degree from the University of Freiburg, a Dr. med. dent. habil. degree (German PhD in Medical Dentistry) from the University of Würzburg, and an MBA from Duke University, Durham, NC; he is board certified in Periodontics in Germany. He was Professor and Head of the Department of Periodontology, University of Würzburg (1996 to 1999) and Professor and Chairman of the Department of Periodontology, University of Münster (1999 to 2005), both in Germany. In June of 2005 Dr. Flemmig was appointed Professor and Chairman and Schluger Endowed Chair of the Department of Periodontics, University of Washington, Seattle, WA.


Dr. Manoj Muthukuru

Dr. Manoj Muthukuru is a clinician, a teacher and a scientist at the University of Washington, School of Dentistry and the Department of Periodontics. He obtained his degree in Dental Surgery at The Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University, India. He then pursued a Ph.D. program in Oral Biology and Pathology with a concentration in Cellular and Molecular Immunology at Stony Brook University, New York. Dr. Muthukuru obtained advanced clinical training in Periodontics and Implant Dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston. Subsequently, he completed two post doctoral research fellowships at Harvard Medical School, at the Department of Dermatology and at the Center for Molecular Medicine.

Dr Muthukuru has obtained acclaims, by being a recipient of both national and international research awards, by participating as an invited international key note speaker and guest speakers, by participating as an Ad Hoc reviewer in periodontal research journal and moreover, by publishing his scientific findings in several international peer reviewed journals.

Manoj strongly feels that the therapeutic modalities in clinical practice should embrace sound scientific research background. He feels fortunate that, through his research expertise in the area related to periodontal diseases and their manifestations during other systemic conditions, he would be able to identify, address and combat the multi-factorial facets of periodontal disease(s).

The ultimate goal and the scope of the clinical practice that Dr. Muthukuru foresees encompass functional, long term stable and a pleasing (esthetic) dental rehabilitative treatment modality that would be tailored based on the needs of the patients who are encountered in the routine dental and dental rehabilitative treatment aspects.
