The Department of Oral Biology consists of a large, diverse and talented group of faculty, staff and students who are committed to building a department which is exceptional in all its activities.

Because the nature of the field of Oral Biology encompasses anatomy, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, developmental biology, immunology, biochemistry, and physiology as they relate to the oral and craniofacial complex, our faculty represent these fields and bring their expertise to dental and craniofacial research. Currently the Department contains 12 core faculty, 28 adjunct faculty and 3 affiliate faculty. These faculty members serve as officers or committee members in their professional organizations, serve on NIH study sections as regular members, serve as grant reviewers for the NSF as well as science organizations in other countries, and serve as reviewers for journals. These service appointments are a reflection of the national recognition of their scientific expertise.

The Department enjoys a strong support staff who bring many years of experience to their positions. They keep the department operating smoothly in the areas of administration, fiscal management, and curriculum and student management. Research scientists and post-doctoral research fellows are actively involved in the research productivity of the Department.

In addition, the Department is home to upwards of 18 graduate students who are working on their Ph.D. or M.S. Degrees. The current student population consists of students from Brazil, China, Columbia, India, Iran, Japan, Lebanon, Portugal, Taiwan, Thailand, and of course, the U.S. These students are seeking careers in dental education or dental research and will serve the future needs of the academic and professional community.
