Dental Camp Featured on CBS Early Morning Show

Dental CampIn case you missed all of the lights and cameras in the D1 Simulation Lab on Tuesday afternoon of this week you'll have a chance to see what all the commotion was about on the CBS Early Morning Show. Tracy Smith and her CBS crew from New York spent the afternoon filming and interviewing participants in one of this summer's Dental Camps, a series of pipeline-building programs that introduce 12-14 year old students from minority and rural backgrounds to dental careers. The broadcast is scheduled to air nationwide (KIRO 7 locally) on Friday, August 15th, sometime between 8:00 and 8:30 AM.

This is the second summer that the School of Dentistry has hosted Dental Camp. This camp evolved in response to work by the Washington Dental Service Foundation's Educational Futures Task Force that identified the need to diversify dental professionals. By providing junior high school students from minority and rural backgrounds with opportunities to perform hands-on activities used in the practice of dentistry, Dental Camp is an initial step to draw their interest toward oral health professions and empower them with information about their own oral health and how to become an oral health professional.

If you would like more information about Dental Camp, contact Dr. Douglass Jackson (jacksond@u.washington.edu), Director of Educational Partnerships in the School of Dentistry, and the director of the program.
