SCHOOL OF DENTISTRY IN THE NEWS
University Week, “UW Dentists Faculty Practice offers full services”, Nestor Cohenca quoted:
New York Magazine, “Brush with Greatness”, spotlight on Ultreo:
LOSSES TO OUR FAMILY
We are deeply saddened by the sudden loss of Grace Yang. Grace began her tenure with the Department of Clinical Services on April 21, 1997. She was a true friend, always cheerful, courteous, helpful and professional. On Tuesday, September 25 the School had planned to host our annual staff awards ceremony at the Don James Center. The afternoon was instead transformed into to a lunch to honor Grace. Fellow staff members took this opportunity to share stories and observations about her wonderful qualities. Grace is survived by her husband Nong Wu and her two sons Norman, 18, and Nathan, 9. She will be greatly missed here at the School. Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time.

The beginning of a new academic year is a good time to take stock of our accomplishments. We are making significant progress in so many areas, just a few of which are included in this edition of the Monthly Communication. Thanks to everyone -- our faculty, staff, students and alumni – who have contributed to these remarkable achievements.

DENTAL COMMUNITY
The WSDA House of Delegates hosted their annual meeting on September 6 and 7. The event provided me with an opportunity to update the Association’s leadership on activities at our School and to personally thank the WSDA for their support for the Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE).
On September 11 the Institute of Translational Health Sciences (ITHS) hosted a symposium choosing the topic of "Utilizing Saliva in Translational Research: Current clinical applications and future proteomic directions" for its first day-long event. The Institute -- a new federally-funded joint-venture between the University of Washington, Seattle Children’s Hospital and Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) -- is charged with developing programs that will facilitate the development of new therapies for human disease. The ITHS symposia are designed to foster collaboration among basic, clinical and translational researchers. Approximately 90 participants gathered in Turner Auditorium (D-209) to hear from guest speakers, including Joel Berg, Chair, UW Department of Pediatric Dentistry; and, Rebecca Slayton, Department of Pediatric Dentistry; as well as John Yates of the Scripps Research Institute and Eleni Kousvelari of the National Institute for Dental-Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). Topics addressed on that day ranged from new research resources to saliva diagnostics. Other speakers included representatives from PATH, the Life Sciences Discovery Fund, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Institute for Systems Biology, and representatives from the University’s Civil & Environmental Engineering unit and Bioengineering.
The School hosted the Dean’s Reception in San Francisco on September 29 at the W Hotel in coordination with the American Dental Association’s (ADA) annual meeting. Eighty-five of our alumni and friends attended including Dexter Barnes (’69), the Washington State Dental Association (WSDA) president, and others from the Association, in support. Excellent food, beverages, and a big screen TV televising the Husky football game against number one-ranked University of Southern California (USC), were enjoyed by our guests. Although we lost to USC by just three points (27-24) our Huskies look stronger each week. Thank you to our California alumni who joined us for this annual affair.
CAMPUS COMMUNITY
Freshman Convocation was held on September 23 at the Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion. It provided the Board of Regents, Deans and other members of University leadership and me with a fantastic opportunity to welcome entering freshman to our campus community. Those in attendance were serenaded with selections by the University Wind Ensemble. Daniel Friedman, Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning, delivered the welcoming address titled "Five Things to Save in Addition to the Planet." The ceremony was broadcast live via UWTV and followed by the President’s Picnic. Neither tickets nor reservations were required and I encourage everyone who is interested to considering attending this memorable event in 2008.
RESEARCH
Research Day is an annual event held by the UW School of Dentistry to recognize our standing as a national leader in dental research. This year’s event occurred on September 21. Research day featured joint-keynote presentations by Beverly A. Dale-Crunk, Professor, Oral Biology, whose speech titled “Musings of a Dental Researcher” was incredibly well-received; and, Roy C. Page, Director, Regional Clinical Dental Research Center, Professor Emeritus, Periodontics, UW School of Dentistry and Pathology, and the UW School of Medicine, who spoke on the topic of “Periodontal Disease Then and Now”. Whasun Chung, Oral Biology and Thomas Beikler, Periodontology also presented. As in years past, Research Day was comprised of an oral session held from 8:00 – 10:50 a.m. and a poster session, which occurred from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Health Sciences Lobby.
Student posters included in the Research Day poster session were judged as part of the Dental Student Research Competition. The competition, organized by the Research Advisory Committee and the UW Student Research Group, selected dental student Cathy Hsu (’10) to receive the 2007-2008 American Dental Association (ADA) Clinician Scholar Award. Cathy will represent the UW School of Dentistry in the national student research competition at the 2008 ADA meeting in San Antonio. Congratulations to Cathy and Ara Greer ('10) who took Second Place and Joe Stout ('10) who placed Third in the competition.
