EDUCATION
The UW School of Dentistry, in collaboration with the UW School of Medicine, presented a poster session titled "Student Rural & Underserved Community Rotations and Medical Student Research & Community Projects" (October 26). This annual session was held on the 3rd floor of the South Campus Center and featured Dental Posters presented by second-year students who participated in community-based rotations during summer 2006 & Medical Posters presented by students participating in Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP); Medical Student Research Training Program (MSRTP); International Health Opportunity Program (IHOP); and, WWAMI Rural Integrated Training Experience (WRITE).
OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY
School of Dentistry students, faculty, staff and representatives from the Western Area Health Education Center (AHEC); the Alaska Center for Rural Health; Health Planning and Systems Development for the State of Alaska Health & Social Services, and other stakeholders attended the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Dental Pipeline "Meet & Greet" (October 13) to discuss the success of Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (R/UOP) program and other programs. R/UOP is designed to provide stimulating opportunities for first-year dental students and to encourage interest in primary care careers in the Northwest (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho). Thanks to the unwavering dedication and support of the Area Health Education Centers of the WWAMI Region, several professional academies, communities throughout the northwest and corporate contributors, the number of applications tripled since R/UOP was first created in 1988. In 2006, the School placed 16, first-year students between 2 to 6 weeks in community and private dental clinics.
CONFERENCES AND EVENTS
Continuing Dental Education (CDE) recently completed their biggest course of the year, “Tim Donley's Extreme Perio Makeover: Office Edition” (October 13). This lecture, second only in size to the Ernest M. Jones Memorial lecture, drew 177 participants and was held at the downtown Seattle Public Library. Information about future CDE courses can be found at www.uwcde.com
The Washington State Dental Association (WSDA), with support from the UW Dental Alumni Association, hosted the Mentor Reception (October 13). WSDA president Rhonda Savage addressed more than 35 mentors and 65 dental students during this annual event, which was held in our own D-1 laboratory. The purpose of this reception is to have an event where students can meet the dentists who serve as their mentors. Special thanks to WSDA membership and our own Alumni Association, who coordinated, funded and made this event possible.
