AWARDS and HONORS

  • AUGUST

  • Dr. Mark Drangsholt, Chair of the Bruce R. Rothwell Teaching Award Committee, presented the Bruce R. Rothwell Teaching Awards to the 2006 recipients at the School of Dentistry Annual Faculty Retreat at the Talrais Conference Center on Monday, August 21 st . Dr. Patricia Rothwell and her son, Barrett, and Dr. Rothwell's sister, Donna Kilburg, were present at the ceremony.  Dr. Bea Gandara, Department of Oral Medicine, received the Bruce R. Rothwell Distinguished Teaching Award in recognition of her new and innovative instructional teaching materials.  The Bruce R. Rothwell Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Robert Johnson, Periodontics, to honor his extensive accomplishment and long-term commitment to excellence in dental education. Both recipients received a plaque and an award of $3500. In addition, their name will be inscribed on a perpetual plaque on display outside the Dean’s Office.


  • MAY
    Fourth-year dental students became the first class in the School’s sixty year history to graduate Access to Baby Child Dentistry (ABCD)-certified (May 22).  During the ceremony Dr. Joel Berg, Chair, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, read aloud letters of commendation from State Health Officer Maxine Hayes and Washington State Governor Christine Gregoire.  This training will enable graduates-turned-dental professionals to help prevent and control major dental problems and costly treatment later in children’s lives. 

  • APRIL
    Cheryl A. Cameron, RDH, PhD, JD, and Professor, Dental Public Health Sciences, has been appointed Vice Provost for Academic Personnel by Provost Phyllis M. Wise, effective April 1, 2006.  As Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, Dr. Cameron will be responsible for the oversight and implementation of University policies and procedures related to faculty, librarians, and other members of the academic personnel community. 

  • Samuel F. Dworkin, DDS, PhD, DSci (Hon) and Professor Emeritus, UW School of Dentistry, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Malmö University in Sweden, for “(his) great achievements in the field of TMD and pain and particularly for (his) support over the years to the Department for Stomatognathic Physiology at Malmö University.”  Dr. Dworkin became a part of the first multi-disciplinary pain clinic in the worldhere at the University of Washington in 1972.  Please join us in congratulating Dr. Dworkin on this remarkable achievement.

    Ken T. Izutsu, PhD and Chair, Department of Oral Biology, and his research collaborators have been recognized for their “significant contributions to the ion channel research and RNA interference fields.”  The research collaborators include Dr. Sahba Fatherazi and Dr. Richard Presland who guided Dr. Shiwei Cai through his PhD thesis work that utilized the RNA interference technique to demonstrate that TRPC channels are required for keratinocyte differentiation.  The team’s work is being entered into the newly formed ion channel and RNA interference research labs registry in Montreal.  More information is available online:   http://www.si-rna.com/showlab.php?surname=Izutsu&initials=KT

    Wendy E. Mouradian, MD, MS and Director, Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE), Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, Pediatric Dentistry, Dental Public Health Sciences and Health Services (Public Health) was accepted to ELAM, or the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM).  Sponsored by the Office of the Dean and Dr. Joel Berg, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, ELAM’s year-long program develops the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage successfully in today’s complex healthcare environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions.  No other School of Dentistry faculty member has been (accepted into this program) to date.  More information is available online:  http://www.drexelmed.edu/elam/home.html

    Kyle K. Schmidt, Graduate Prosthodontics, has been chosen to receive the David H. Wands Fellowship in Prosthodontics.  Kyle is the second recipient of this prestigious and unique fellowship.  Kyle was also selected for the American College of Prosthodontics Education Foundation Scholarship. Congratulations, Kyle!

    Shiwei Cai, a Graduate Student in the Advanced Program in Endodontics, won first place honors in the Graduate Student Research Poster Competition at the Annual Session of the American Association of Endodontists in Honolulu, Hawaii (March 29 - April 1).  Dr. Cai's research poster presentation was entitled "Mineralization and phosphate related gene expression in differentiating human dental pulp stem cells".  The competition is sponsored by Dentsply, Inc.  Faculty member Dr. Nestor Cohenca also presented on Replacement root resorption.

    MARCH
    Thomas H. Morton, Jr., Departments of Oral Biology and Oral Medicine and Martha H. Fales, Department of Dental Public Health Sciences, were recognized by the National Association of Medical Minority Educators (NAMME) (March 3).  Dr. Morton and Dr. Fales were two of only sixteen individuals honored with NAMME's 2006 Diversity Trailblazer Award, which "acknowledged the legacy of those individuals whose persistent vigilance and continuous effort working on behalf of students of color has helped to create a more equitable and diverse environment in the health sciences.” 

    Beverly Dale-Crunk was elected as a Member-at-Large of the Section Committee of the Section on Dentistry and Oral Health Science for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). 

    Ching-Yi Wu, a Ph.D. student in Oral Biology, was selected to receive the 2006 Magnuson Award for the School of Dentistry.  The purpose of this program is to recognize graduate students with outstanding potential for research in the health sciences.  The program and award is funded by a $2M endowment from the Warren G. Magnuson Institute for Biomedical Research and Health Professions Training.  Dr. Wu joined the Oral Biology Graduate Program in 2003 and is pursuing her Ph.D. under the direction of Dr. Eileen Watson.  Her current research involves the signaling pathways regulating salivary protein secretion.

    Fourth-year student Zach Lowe was one of seven students chosen to compete in the Clinical Caulk-Dentsply competition out of those that submitted posters.  Each student gave a ten minute oral presentation of his or her research poster, which was followed by five minutes of Questions and Answers from the judges.  Zach’s project, “Soft Tissue Changes Associated with Maxillary Le Fort I Surgery” was done with collaboration with Dr. Dale Bloomquist and his mentor was Dr. Rafael Alcalde, both from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

    FEBRUARY
    Fourth-year student Ryan Kidman attend  the 2006 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Prosthodontic Society in Chicago (February 22-26) to receive a scholarship awarded by the organization.   

    JANUARY
    Rebecca Slayton, DDS, PhD became graduate program director for the Department of Pediatric Dentistry (January 1).  Previously Dr. Slayton served as director of the Early Childhood Oral Health (ECOH) program in the department and as research director. 

    Beverly Dale-Crunk, PhD, Professor, Oral Biology was elected as a Member-at-Large of the Section Committee of the Section on Dentistry and Oral Health Sciences (R) for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AASS) (January 10). 

    The D.G. Marquis Behavioral Neuroscience Award was given to Dental Public Health faculty member Karl Kaiyala and his colleagues for their paper, "Intraventricular insulin and leptin reverse place preference conditioned with high-fat diet in rats." The award is given each year to recognize the best paper in Behavioral Neuroscience and is chosen by the journal's Editor and Consulting Editors.

    E. Ricardo Schwedhelm,
    DDS, MSD has been selected as the Omicron Kappa Upsilon (OKU) Charles Craig Award.  The Award recognizes the accomplishments and dedication of a junior faculty members “who have demonstrated new and innovative teaching techniques in teaching the art, science and literature of dentistry.”  The award will be presented at the OKU Annual Meeting in Orlando (March 8).

    Congratulations to the Class of 2007 who achieved the ranking of 12th out of 56 other institutions on the National Board Dental Examinations Part I.
