The department is well-known for its outstanding graduate program. While the pre-doctoral program is small relative to the entire curriculum, the program is distinguished in its emphasis on small group seminars. Three members of the department have substantial NIH grants, and the department consistently is ranked near the top in the nation with regard to the number of publications in refereed journals.
