The University of Washington Department of Orthodontics has a renowned reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and patient care. We have been proudly serving the community since 1950.
The Faculty Orthodontics Clinic offers orthodontic treatment by participating faculty clinicians to patients who prefer treatment by experienced faculty members, desire faster entry into treatment, or who are not offered treatment in the graduate program clinic.
The faculty practice offers exceptional orthodontic care with no waiting lists, no deposits, and more efficient care.
Our doctors are qualified clinicians who have completed advanced training in orthodontic specialty care. The faculty practice maintains an emphasis on using the best evidence for clinical decision-making.
Dr. Geoff Greenlee completed his undergraduate and dental training at the University of Michigan, and then completed a Masters degree and clinical residency in orthodontics at the University of Washington. An interest in cleft lip/palate and craniofacial anomalies led Dr. Greenlee to do a fellowship in this subspecialty at Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Currently, Dr. Greenlee is Clinical Assistant Professor in the department of Orthodontics at the University of Washington in Seattle where he teaches, practices, does research, and sits on multiple scholarship and student affairs committees. Dr. Greenlee is nearly finished with a second Masters degree in public health (epidemiology). Research interests include evidence-based care, CLP and craniofacial anomalies, access to care for underserved populations, and quality of life.
Dr. John Denny completed his undergraduate and dental training at the University of Washington in 1974. Upon graduation, he entered active duty in the US Air Force Dental Corps, and went on to a 30-year military career. He completed a general practice residency at Keesler Medical Center in 1975, and a Master’s program in orthodontics at Temple in 1987. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics in 1993 and achieved the military rank of Colonel. Denny went on to become the Chair of the Tri-Service orthodontic residency program at Lackland AFB and the Consultant in Orthodontics to the Air Force Surgeon General from 1999-2004. Upon his military retirement, he returned to the Seattle area and continues to practice and teach as a Clinical Instructor. Dr. Denny is involved in teaching seminars, supervising a rotation, and is a clinical supervisor in the Thursday clinic.
Faculty practice orthodontists perform screening exams primarily for treatment in the faculty practice. Some patients may be offered treatment in the graduate orthodontics clinic for reduced fees if your examiner finds that you would be a good patient for the teaching program.
All patients who are screened receive the examiner's diagnosis and recommendations for orthodontic treatment. Treatment options may include referral to a private practitioner or treatment at one the UW orthodontic clinics. You can discuss these options with your examiner and/or take the exam findings back to your general dentist for further advice.
Guidelines for Faculty Orthodontic Screening:
- Children are often screened at 7-8 years old although treatment is not always indicated at this early age
- Patients should have good oral hygiene (brushing & eating) habits
- You should be under the care of a general dentist and routinely receive professional dental care
- All active disease, such as cavities or periodontal disease, should be diagnosed and treated
- Understand that appointment times are limited to the days the faculty orthodontist practices

Financial Terms
If you receive orthodontic treatment at the University of Washington, you enter into a contract that commits the Faculty Practice to providing the proposed treatment and commits you to paying the total fee.
Payment Plan: You can pay your orthodontic fee in total or finance treatment using the CitiCard. For comprehensive orthodontic treatment, there is a deposit of $550.00. You may make a down payment when the patient is starts treatment, or finance the remaining balance with CitiCard.
Insurance: You are responsible for the full cost of treatment and for compliance with the payment schedule, regardless of any insurance that may apply. If you have dental insurance, you are responsible for determining your level of coverage and for collecting your benefits. Many policies do not cover orthodontic care, although many provide some assistance. Clinic staff will provide any records you need to file for insurance benefits, but you may be responsible for filing the claims.
