Externship Program Description

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a 4 to 6 week externship. During the externship, visiting students rotate to Harborview Medical Center and University Hospital. Harborview Medical Center is the regional trauma hospital where jaw fractures are treated and is operated as an outpatient clinic. University Hospital is a tertiary care facility where elective cases are treated and operate our outpatient clinic.

Externs attend the Harborview operating room sessions on Monday mornings, Wednesday afternoons, and Friday mornings; the Harborview outpatient clinic on Monday afternoons, Tuesday mornings, Wednesday mornings, and Friday afternoons; and the University Hospital operating room session all day Thursday. Tuesday afternoons the extern attends a residency teaching seminar at the University. Wednesday mornings are dedicated to the trauma and anesthesia conference, and Friday morning teaching rounds at Harborview.

Visiting dental students may be observers only and may not participate in patient care including dental assisting. Because you will not be an enrolled student, you will not be charged tuition or fees. However, all expenses involved in your stay will be your responsibility.
