Graduate Program Cirriculum

The following courses are included in the graduate program in Oral Medicine:

ORALM 567: Behavioral Management of Acute/Chronic Pain

Lecture/Seminar course directed toward anxiety, depression, hysteria, illness behavior, etc. producing pain states and resulting from chronic pain disorders. Perspective on psychotherapy, behavioral therapies, psychoactive medications, and other therapeutic measures are discussed.

ORALM 565: Oral Medicine Clinical Conference

Clinical conferences in which diagnostic data concerning patients seen in the oral medicine clinic are presented for evaluation. When possible the patient is present, along with laboratory findings, radiographs, and the results of special tests.

ORALM 570: Oral Medicine and Therapeutics

Seminar course directed toward the presentation and discussion of oral diseases and oral manifestations of systemic disease. The clinical manifestations' relationship to generalized disease processes and patient management with in-depth discussions of therapy is the primary focus of the course. Heavy emphasis is placed upon temporomandibular joint disorders, as well as other pain states of the head and neck region.

ORALM 576: Oral Medicine Literature Review

Seminar analyzes the recent literature concerning the area of oral medicine, diagnosis, and therapy for oral disease.

ORALM 580: Current Concepts in Oral Radiology

This lecture/seminar course for graduate students in clinical areas in the School of Dentistry covers current concepts in oral radiology including technical factors, radiation risks, observer characteristics and variation, radiographic localization, interpretation, and overview of current extraoral techniques.
Offered: Summer Quarter

ORALM 581: Advanced Seminars in Radiology

These seminars for graduate students in clinical disciplines explore aspects of oral and maxillofacial radiology and related fields. The course is offered Autumn, Winter and Spring Quarters.

ORALM 600: Independent Study or Research

Clinical research in which the student selects a clinical project dealing with the diagnosis and/or nonsurgical treatment of oral disease, develops a protocol, and, after faculty approval, completes the project. Offered on credit/no credit basis only.

ORALM 660: Rotations in Medical Disciplines

Clinical exposure and participation in medical disciplines to include: Otolarynology and Head & Neck Surgery, Radiology, Internal Medicine, Pain, General Anesthesia, Oncology and Dermatology. When available the student will attend all clinical conferences concurrent to the clinical rotation. The intent of this course is to give credit for rotations in selected medical disciplines. Not all students will participate in each of the disciplines.

ORALM 665: Clinical Oral Medicine

Clinic involving the diagnostic evaluation of patients with difficult and unusual oral disease. The conditions treated include primary oral diseases, oral manifestations of systemic diseases, and oral defects resulting from medical treatment of serious systemic disease. The most common category of condition seen is temporomandibular joint disorders. Types of therapy include medications and chemical agents, functional physical therapy, and counseling.

ORALM 670: Clinical Oral Medicine Teaching

Clinic designed to give the student experience and instruction in the teaching of clinical oral diagnosis. Treatment of emergency dental problems as well as routine and special diagnostic procedures is emphasized.

DENT 565: Dental Photography

Designed to provide the student with sufficient knowledge and experience to select and use correct photographic equipment for photographing patients (facial and intraoral), casts, instruments, x-rays, charts, and objects.

ORAL B 565: Clinical Oral Pathology

Presentation of interesting oral lesions from the dental school and the University Hospital and the correlation of the clinical findings with the underlying morphologic and biochemical changes in the tissues. The relation of these oral lesions to systemic disease is stressed. Primarily designed for students with D.D.S., M.D., or D.V.M. degrees. Prerequisite: permission of instructor.

ORAL B 574: Clinical Stomatology

Diseases of the oral cavity and jaw are presented as practitioners encounter them. Detailed clinical picture, laboratory tests, radiographic findings, surgical exploration, may all be utilized for the establishment of a therapeutic diagnosis.

ORAL B 577: Applied Dental Therapeutics

A course in pharmacology and therapeutics for graduate dental students.

PERIO 575: Immunologic Aspects of Oral Diseases

Lecture course designed to acquaint students with basic concepts of immunology and immunopathology. Topics: cellular immunology, antibody structure and function, complement system, immunopathologic mechanisms, tumor immunology and immunologic manifestations in mucocutaneous oral lesions as well as immunology of caries and periodontal disease.

DPHS 550: Research/Biostatistics

Those graduate students interested in the Master of Science in Dentistry degree will also take courses in research design, computer analysis of data, biostatistics, and complete a research project.

Head and Neck Radiology

A series of courses are offered by the School's radiologist. Emphasis is on head and neck radiology utilizing extraoral techniques such as tomography and CAT scanning.

Psychology/Psychiatry

A series of courses are offered by the Department psychologist covering psychiatric syndromes seminars to discuss patients seen clinically and clinical sessions for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions of patients with orofacial disorders.

Salivary Gland Series

A series of courses are offered on salivary gland anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. These courses are intended to establish the basic science foundations of clinically oriented disorders involving salivary glands.

Special lectures on selected topics

In addition to the above courses, the residents will be required to attend selected conferences and lectures such as:
