Short-Term Fellowships
This training option links dental training directly to care delivery and rehabilitation services for persons with a disability. Courses of 4-8 weeks provide individualized Home-Based Self-Study Distance Learning Unit (see below) and clinical instruction that relates to the specific interests of participating dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants.
Equal opportunity will be given to dentists, dental hygienists, and dental assistants. Fellows will complete a 40 hour Home-Based Self-Study Distance Learning Unit prior to their clinical participation. Dates are individually negotiated. Early application is advised.
Home-Based Self-Study Distance Learning Unit
The Home-Based Self-Study Distance Learning Unit consists of a series of self-study modules, accompanying video presentations and lecture outlines, and pre-and post-tests. Subject matter will include:
Introduction to Rehabilitation Medicine
The State-Federal Rehabilitation System
Developmental Disabilities
Sensory Impairments
Treatment of Medically Compromised Patients
Special Needs of the Geriatric Patient
The Patient with Chronic Mental Illness
Management Techniques, Wheelchair Transfers, Use of Portable Equipment
Dental Prevention for the Special Patient
Psychosocial Issues
Clinical Components
Minimum of 15 days of chair/bedside training and supervised delivery of care will allow trainees to obtain experience in treatment of various disabled populations. Part-time clinical participation also may be arranged. Trainees will rotate to institutions and clinics for persons with developmental disabilities, to rehabilitation centers and to geriatric long-term care facilities located at or near the U.W. In each situation the trainees and attending instructors will function as a team and work in close collaboration with other health care professionals in the planning and delivery of care. Training also will include the use of portable equipment in the treatment of homebound patients.
Academic Status
The program is university approved and cosponsored by the Department of Continuing Dental Education, University of Washington School of Dentistry. Continuing education credit will be awarded. The program at the University of Washington is also approved for maintenance, Fellowship, and Mastership requirements by the Academy of General Dentistry.
