Self-Directed Modules

These modules are designed for the dental professional who would like to treat patients with special needs or gain more knowledge in this field. This series can be used exclusively as a self-directed course of study, or may be completed in preparation for on-site clinical training through DECOD at the University of Washington. Continuing Dental Education credit can be obtained by ordering modules as a correspondence course and by completing a multiple choice examination. To order, please fill out the order form.

The modules were developed and revised by the DECOD Program under the direction of Doris J. Stiefel, DDS, MS, and Edmond L. Truelove, DDS, MSD, in consultation with experts from dentistry, medicine, social work, and nursing. Development of these materials was supported by the Rehabilitation Services Administration, U.S. Department of Education, grant #G108400015.

MODULE I
Rehabilitation of the Dental Patient with a Disability

Units in this series present an overview of disabling conditions most likely to be encountered in the dental office, and provide guidelines on rehabilitation goals and services, legal considerations, and federal, state, and community resources. These units also will present considerations in access to care, including ways to maximize resources, from developing referral directories to establishing a mobile dental practice, with practical information on economic considerations and equipment. Techniques are described for safe transfer of the patient from the wheelchair to the dental chair and back.

Dental Prevention for the Patient with a Disability

A comprehensive illustrated text on components of an effective preventive program for the special needs patient. Topics include specific techniques for utilization of adaptive aids, fluoride, salivary substitutes, nutritional considerations, in-service training of non-dental attendants, and care of the comatose patient. MODULE IV
The Medically Compromised Patient in Dental Practice

This revised module addresses treatment of patients with major medical conditions. Background information is provided on etiology, pathophysiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of the given disorder. For each condition, dental management is covered with respect to scheduling, control of pain and anxiety, drug interactions, control of infection, specific treatment considerations, and management of emergencies. MODULE V
Anxiety and Pain Control for the Dental Patient with a Disability

Unit A of this series defines the underlying philosophy and discusses methods of changing behavior in a dental setting: positive vs. negative reinforcement and the development of new behaviors through modeling, shaping, cueing, and prompting. It also offers a practical guide to the clinical applications of desensitization for overcoming fear and anxiety. Unit B stresses principles of safe sedation and offers general guidelines for the effective administration of sedative agents to the patient with disabilities, including issues of monitoring, choice of drug, and dosage.
