Overview
The name of this department was changed in 1987 from the Department of Community Dentistry to Dental Public Health Sciences. The department is a research-oriented department that operates mainly in the interface between public health (several of the faculty hold joint appointments in the School of Public Health) and dentistry.
Mission
Its teaching role in the pre-doctoral program involves didactic and clinical training in behavioral sciences, specifically in treating anxious and fearful patients through its clinical component, the Dental Fears Research Clinic; as well as introduction to the use of research methodology for lifelong learning through courses and mentoring of students participating in the SURF program.
Additional Information
Significant other components housed within this department include the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program for dental hygienists (the only undergraduate program in the School of Dentistry); a funded postdoctoral training program in Public Health and Behavioral Research Training, which is unique nationally; the Biometry Core of the Comprehensive Center for Oral Health Research (which conducts the annual Summer Institute in Clinical Dental Research Methods for faculty from dental schools, including graduate courses in biostatistics and clinical epidemiology in dentistry, taken by postgraduate students from the School of Dentistry); and several major research projects.
