A message from Martha Somerman

Since 1945 the University of Washington School of Dentistry has been attracting leaders in oral health care science from around the world. As the leading educator of dental professionals in the Pacific Northwest we have trained thousands of oral health care providers practicing in Washington. We seek to educate a progressive oral health workforce, develop community collaborations, and bring advances in science to address the pressing oral health needs of our state, the nation and the world. We do this by preparing our students to be the most competent oral health care professionals possible.

Our graduates master a rigorous program, and are superbly equipped to meet the challenges that they’ll face as dental professionals head on. In little more than half of a century the UW School of Dentistry has grown into a premier institution that is recognized for its excellence nationally and internationally:

  • Our students perform exceptionally well on didactic and clinical exams, National Boards and Western Regional Examining Boards (WREB) respectively, achieving a 100% pass rate on the WREB for 2007;
  • With 230 dental chairs available we provide more than 66,000 patient visits each year, with unique care offered in our Dental Fears Research Clinic (DFRC), General Practice Residency (GPR) Clinic for medically-compromised patients, DECOD Clinic for patients with disabilities (Dental Education in the Care of Persons with Disabilities), and other outreach sites on campus and in the community;
  • The UW School of Dentistry’s grant funding awarded by the National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) has consistently ranked in the top five academic institutions and schools of dentistry.

As you review our site, it is my hope that you too will come to realize that we are privileged to have many friends, alumni, faculty, staff and students who have made significant contributions to the UW School of Dentistry’s past advancements, and will continue to help us achieve even greater advancements in oral health in the future.
