DENTAL CARE OF THE DISABLED (DECOD)--Didactic and Clinical Training

Training in oral care and management of persons with disability is available for dentists, hygienists and assistants. The program is designed to link dental training to delivery and rehabilitation services for persons with disability. Training formats are didactic and clinical. Training varies from 1 day to 20 days and registrants can pay tuition.

Didactic Training
The didactic part of the DECOD training is composed of a home-based, self-study Distance Learning Unit consisting of workbook modules, accompanying videotapes and pre/post tests. Participants can select from topics such as: medically compromised, developmental disabilities, sensory impairments, special needs of geriatric patients and patients with chronic mental illness, drug therapy, psycho-social issues and sedation and anesthesia for patients with disabilities. (Note - this unit may stand alone for CDE credit for individuals unable to participate in clinical training. See "Short-Term/Non-Fellowship DECOD Training.")

Clinical Training
The clinical part of the DECOD training consists of chair/bedside training and supervised delivery of care at a University of Washington facility. Participants rotate to institutions for persons with developmental disabilities, rehabilitation centers and geriatric long-term care facilities. Additional participation includes a homebound program using mobile equipment. In each situation participants will function as a team in the planning and delivery of care.

Individuals register for DECOD training through the DECOD office, (206) 543-1546, into either one of the following programs:
