Course Description:

Direct esthetic restorations should be durable, require less chairtime and involve fewer steps, while providing the desired esthetic outcome. Utilizing the concept of layering and translucency experienced with porcelain veneers, a new generation of microhybrid composite resins have been formulated and developed for both anterior and posterior esthetic restorations. The new composites are opalescent, fluorescent, sag resistant and more polishable. These new composites not only eliminate many chairside and clinical problems associated with direct esthetic restorations, but also provide for better esthetic results.

This participation course is designed to provide comprehensive practical and hands-on information on placement of anterior and posterior direct composite restorations. It will discuss the clinical application of new tooth colored materials for anterior and posterior direct esthetic restorations.

Topics to be Discussed:

  • Rethinking the traditional concept for placement of direct esthetic restorations
  • Achieving esthetic and function with minimally invasive dentistry in a timely fashion
  • Eliminating the show-through effect associated with direct esthetic restorations
  • Anterior composite veneers with minimal tooth preparation utilizing the concept of translucency
  • Anterior Class III, Class IV and Class V restorations
  • Posterior direct esthetic restorations
  • Establishing proper interproximal contacts with composite resin
  • Achieving more polished and more lustrous composite resin in less chair time

Hands-On Session:

  • Three anterior restorations (Class III, IV and V)
  • Two posterior restorations (Class I and II)

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Emulate the esthetic appearance of natural teeth with direct composite resin restorations
  • Use the layering method to achieve ideal esthetic results with direct anterior restorations
  • Discuss the importance of underlying tooth structure in producing life-like direct esthetic restorations
  • Discuss the concepts of translucency and opacity for placement of direct esthetic restorations
  • Discuss the importance of stratification method in placement of composite resin restorations
  • Discuss the role of tooth whitening in direct and indirect esthetic restorations
  • Discuss the importance of incremental placement in reducing clinical complications associated with direct esthetic restorations
  • Place in a timely fashion direct anterior and posterior esthetic restorations in a simulated conditioner
  • Place Class II restoration with excellent interproximal contact
  • Achieve highly polished surface with direct esthetic restorations in a timely fashion
  • Reduce unnecessary steps in placement and finalization of direct esthetic restorations
  • Perform intraoral repair of porcelain with composite resin with excellent esthetic results
