Course Description:

Cancer is the second leading cause of death behind cardiovascular diseases and unlike them, cancer rates are not significantly decreasing.  Head, neck, and oral cancers continue to be a serious problem with survival rates of only about 50% long term. This has remained unchanged for the past 40 years.  This course will provide information about cancer as it relates to our personal health and the health of our patients. Signs, symptoms, advances in diagnosis, and therapy will be discussed. Advances in the detection and treatment of head and neck cancers will be a major focus of the program. Recent findings related to cancer risk and prevention for major cancers will also be a focus. The impact of cancer and cancer treatments on oral health and dental care will be addressed.  The current status of dental management of patients who have undergone treatment for head and neck cancer will be presented.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, those attending should be able to:

  • Discuss methods for prevention of the most prevalent types of cancer and particularly oral cancer
  • Manage oral complications from cancer treatment
  • Describe appropriate cancer surveillance methods in dental practice
