Course Description:

The course offers the necessary background in sleep medicine, oral appliance therapy, and practice management that will provide attendees the training necessary to implement a dental sleep medicine component in their practice immediately. This course is intended for dentists and dental professionals with an interest in, or currently treating snoring and obstructive sleep apnea patients through the utilization of oral appliance therapy.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss obstructive sleep apnea to include its symptoms, diagnosis and treatment options
  • Explain the close association of various disorders including hypertension, metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress disorder to obstructive sleep apnea
  • Identify the anatomy of the upper airway, including the differences between the normal and apneic airway structures
  • Name and describe the various treatment options available for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, with particular focus on various oral appliance therapies, and non-surgical treatments
  • Understand how oral appliances work.  Learn how to choose the proper oral appliance according to the patient's needs and the devices characteristics
  • Properly titrate the oral appliance when treating patients
  • Outline potential side effects of oral appliance therapy and options for managing their complications in patients
  • Assess the published research regarding oral appliances and the guidelines for their use in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea and snoring
  • Discuss ideas for building and developing a successful dental sleep medicine practice, including an overview of proper patient management and working as part of a team in the treatment of these patients

Instructor:

SHERI KATZ received her dental degree from Emory University School of Dentistry. She has practiced in Decatur, Georgia since 1978 and has developed a special interest in, and has limited her practice to the field of Dental Sleep Medicine. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Katz has a strong vision of Dentistry being an integral part of the field of Sleep. Through her role as the Director of Dental Sleep Medicine and Oral Appliance Therapy Program at the Fusion Sleep Center in Atlanta, Georgia, she is actively creating a working model of a Dental Sleep Medicine Dentist working as part of a sleep center team.

Currently, Dr. Katz is the President Elect of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. In addition, she is a member of the Education and Curriculum Committee and holds membership with the American Dental Association and the Georgia Dental Association.

Dr. Katz’s involvement in the AADSM includes being Chair of the Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine Courses in 2005, 2006 and 2007. She helped develop and facilitated the AADSM’s first Literature Review Study Club and she is proud to be an active participant of the Mentorship Program.
