Course Description:
Lecture Session:

This first part of this course is designed to update participants on developments in the discipline of forensic odontology, and familiarize dentists and dental teams with various aspects of the field. Emphasis will be placed on those forensic subjects in which dentists and their staff persons may be asked to participate or assist in active investigations. Protocols for assistance will be discussed and outlined for the participants. Topics will include historical perspectives, identification methodology, dental identification techniques, missing/wanted/unidentified person issues in our state and nationally, digital radiography, mass casualty incidents and bitemark investigations.

Resources for continuing interest and training in the field of Forensic Odontology will be presented. The total program is designed for both experienced forensic dentists as well as dental professionals who have an interest in the forensic sciences.

Lab Session:
The second part of this course will be a hands-on exercise in the examination and analysis of postmortem dental remains and the analysis and interpretation of antemortem dental records. This part of the course will prepare the participants to assist in both mass casualty incidents and in the investigation of missing, wanted and unidentified person cases.

  • Discuss forensic dentistry
  • Realize how the dental professional can help with:

    • bite mark cases
    • missing person cases
    • unidentified human remains cases
  • Know how to get started in forensic dentistry
