Course Description:

Drugs play important roles in clinical dental practice, both as therapeutic agents prescribed or administered by the dentist and as factors that must be considered when developing an appropriate treatment plan and in providing safe and effective dental care. The rapid development of new drugs for medical use and the continuing acquisition of new knowledge regarding existing agents pose dual challenges for the dental professional engaged in private practice.

Current issues influencing dental care include the problem of bisphosphonate-associated osteonecrosis, new guidelines for the prevention of infective endocarditis, and the potential role of articaine in causing nerve injury. Issues lurking on the horizon include the potential negative effects of sedative/anesthetic drugs on young children and a possible problem in the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for postoperative pain control.

The introduction of Oraquix™ for periodontal therapy offers non-injectable pain relief, but the adoption of non-approved high-concetration topical anesthetics for various dental procedures is potentially of great concern. New drugs that may influence dental practice include a dental cartridge formulation of phentolamine mesylate to reverse local anesthesia.

These and/or other drug topics of greatest contemporary concern to dentistry will be reviewed in this course. The ultimate aim is to assist the clinician in using dental drugs optimally and in modifying dental care appropriately in relation to the patient's overall therapeutic regimen.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify and describe areas of controversy regarding dental therapeutics
  • Discuss new pharmacologic agents and their potential applications in dentistry
  • Use dental drugs optimally
  • Modify dental treatment in relation to the patient's overall therapeutic regimen where appropriate
