Course Description:

Oral diseases such as dental caries and periodontal disease affect a large portion of the U.S. population and can interfere with a person's quality of life. As dental practitioners, our goal is to promote good oral health and to diagnose, manage and treat dental disease in our patients. Because of the complex etiology of oral diseases, it is essential that patients be assessed on an individual basis and that disease management be based on the risk factors that are unique to each patient. The purpose of this course is to educate dental practitioners in the State of Washington about the factors that contribute to dental caries and periodontal disease in patients. Evidence based risk factors will be discussed along with the manifestation of disease resulting from them. Methodologies for assessing a patient's risk for dental caries and/or periodontal disease will be described. Treatment modalities based on individual risk assessment outcomes will be defined.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:

  • List risk factors that contribute to dental caries
  • Assess individual risk for dental caries and periodontal disease
  • Illustrate how dental caries can be managed to reduce risk
  • Be proficient in the management of the disease process
