This program was established in 1985 by a generous contribution from the Washington Dental Service Foundation that is matched by the Washington State Legislature. The primary responsibility of the professorship is to plan and conduct a triennial international symposium on state-of-the-art issues facing dentistry.
Course Description:
When advising patients about the need for orthodontic treatment and evaluating outcomes, it is important that all dental professionals have a common understanding of orthodontics. Frequently this is not the case. This symposium is designed to address some of the common orthodontic questions that can arise in multidisciplinary communication.
After completing this course, the participant should be able to:
- Demonstrate clinical examples of orthodontic treatments where compromise was successful
- Understand the sources of need and demand in orthodontic treatment
- Appreciate the role of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment in TMD
- Recognize the literature support for a link between periodontal disease and orthodontic treatment
- Demonstrate some clinical examples of orthodontic treatment that can be achieved in non-orthodontic practices
- Review the oral health and orthodontic implications of bisphosphonates
- Introduce the future possibilities of bioengineered tooth replacements
