Course Description:

Dental Photography is an extremely valuable tool for practicing dentists, auxiliaries and dental educators. By using new technologies such as digital imaging, we can visually communicate with patients, labs, insurance providers and our peers faster and easier than ever before. Aspects of photography and imaging, and how they relate to dentistry, will be discussed. Equipment and techniques, intra- and extra-oral photography, and the photography and electronic imaging of other dental-related subjects will also be covered.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:

  • Acquaint the novice dental photographer with the techniques required for excellent dental views
  • Give the clinician an introduction to Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft PowerPoint and how they relate to dentistry
  • Demonstrate importance of incorporating digital imaging into your practice and presentations

Lab – Limited to 13 participants

The lab session will allow the participant first-hand exposure to high-quality digital dental photography equipment. After practicing the techniques taught in the morning session, participants will process images into both extra- and intra-oral photos. By using a laptop and a digital projector, participants will see first-hand how easy it is to work with digital dental photography.

Required Lab Equipment:

Please bring mirrors, retractors and a rubber mixing bowl (for warm water to heat the mirrors). If you have a digital clinical camera that you would like to practice with, please feel free to bring it along. Please make sure that it is in good working condition (batteries, etc). If you have any questions about your camera’s dental capabilities email Jim at clarkj@u.washington.edu.
