Course Description:
The practice of dentistry is influenced by the society it is designed to serve. Society manifests its influence through ever-changing federal, state and local regulations and in the health services marketplace. This course is designed to update dental professionals on regulations that affect dental practice and offer management strategies to avoid legal problems.

JOHN S. DAVIS earned his dental degree from the University of Washington in 1978. He went on to complete a General Practice residency at the Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio in 1979 and worked in Private Practice from 1979 through 1993. In addition to his dental education, Dr. Davis received his Juris Doctorate from the Seattle University School of Law in 1997. He is currently Dental Administrator for Medicaid in Washington State and an examiner for Western Regional Examining Board. Dr. Davis is a past member of the Washington State Dental Quality Assurance Commission (1999-2007, including Chairman), past member of the Board of Directors of the Western Regional Examining Board. His areas of professional interest include risk management, governmental rule and policy development.
JUDY L. MIMS received her BA in Political Science, Phi Beta Kappa from University of Idaho in 1990 and in 1993 earned a Juris Doctorate at Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C. From 1993 until 2004, she was an Assistant Attorney General representing public agencies, including the University of Washington, in all employment and labor union matters. In 2004, she took on an administrative role in higher education at the University of Washington School of Medicine as the Associate Director of Personnel Policy and Faculty Administration working on various policy and employment matters involving tenured medical faculty. She is a member of the National Association of College ad University Attorneys (NACUA).
She has been honored by her peers as an "Outstanding Lawyer" by the Government Lawyers Bar Association in 1998 and as "Super Lawyer" in 2002 and 2003 by the Washington Law & Politics magazine. She served on the King County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division Board as a Trustee ad Chair from 1999-2001. From 2002-2006, she was the Public Sector lawyer/representative and Chair (2006) of the Executive Committee for the Labor & Employment Section of the Washington State Bar Association.
JOHN C. VERSNEL, III was admitted to the Washington bar in 1988. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for Eastern and Western Districts of Washington as well as the U.S. Supreme Court. Mr. Versnel graduated from the University of Washington in 1983 with a BA and received his Juris Doctorate from Seattle University in 1987. He is the co-author of "Corporate Responsibility for Free Enterprise," University of Toledo Law Review (1986). Mr. Versnel practices in the areas of professional liability, defense of doctors and dentists in civil suits, long-term care, professional licensing and employment law. He is a frequent speaker at risk management seminars and continuing education courses.
