Course Description:

Bloodborne pathogen training is an annual requirement (WAC 296-823-12005) for everyone in every dental practice per the laws of the State of Washington (WAC 296-823) and will be provided in this session. The essence of the training is to understand the risks of communicable diseases, the steps that can and must be taken in the dental practice to minimize these risks, and when the inevitable happens, what to do to assure the best outcome. When an exposure happens, are you comfortable approaching a known source patient? Who provides the required counseling, and how do HIPAA regulations affect the health records of patients or personnel exposed?

Instructors:

FRANK ROBERTS is an Associate Professor in the Peridontics Department at the University of Washington and Chief of Periodontics at the Seattle Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Roberts research involves understanding the molecular mechanisms of chronic inflammatory disease progression, the bacterial pathogenesis of periodontitis, and biology and imaging of the dental implant.

SANDRA PHILLIPS received her BS and MPA (Master of Public Administration) degrees from the University of Washington. She has been a member of the UW School of Dentistry's faculty since 1988, and is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Practice Management for the Department of Restorative Dentistry. Currently she is Director of Clinic Operations and has served on the School’s Health and Safety Task force since its inception in 1994 and is a member of the Coordinated Quality Improvement Committee. Throughout her time at the UW, she has developed and improved strategies for minimizing risk in the dental clinic, and dealt with most aspects of practice management.

GWEN RIKANSRUD has 25 years of private practice experience as a chair side assistant. Since 1994, she has been manager of the UW School of Dentistry's undergraduate dental clinics, and is central to the School's health and safety program. She has served on the School's Health and Safety Task Force and is the School's elected representative to the center's Health & Safety Committee. Gwen is the co-developer of the current on-line Blood Borne Pathogens program used for training staff, students and the dental school faculty. In her capacity as Safety Officer, she also manages the Hazard Communication Training program, involving the identification of chemical hazards, labeling, MSDS tools and infection control.

Dinner Selection:

All meals are accompanied by a dessert and bottled water. Sandwiches come with a side salad, and salads come with rustic artisan bread.

Ham and Gouda Sandwich*: shaved Black Forest ham, smoked Gouda, lettuce, tomato and stone ground mustard on ciabatta.

Roasted Veggie Sandwich: hummus with roasted seasonal veggies such as: eggplant, red peppers and mushrooms, cucumber and roasted garlic-basil spread on wheat.

Mediterranean Chicken Salad: sliced, roasted chicken breast, tomato wedges, feta, cucumbers and kalamata olives over romaine lettuce. Citrus vinaigrette.
