Course Description:
This course will present a mix of the most recent reports describing conventional drugs, herbal supplements and nutraceuticals having impact on dental practice. For conventional drugs, the aspirin and Plavix patient will be discussed, newly approved dental drugs and products described including those for RAU, herpes labialis, new dentifrices, “remineralizaion” dentifrices, OTC whitening/bleaching agents; Halcion and the new Z-drugs for sedation; articaine and paresthesias, the most recent FAQs on antibiotic prophylaxis presented, the latest on heart attacks, CRP, homocysteine levels and periodontal disease discussed including antibiotic use and increased risk of breast cancer; and life after the Vioxx fiasco.
For herbal supplements, free radicals, reactive oxygen species, antioxidants, green/white/red teas, blueberries, grape seed extract, bioflavonoids and more will be described; trends and efficacies of dental herbal products will be discussed including melissa, propolis, calendula, aloe vera, Co-Q-10, tea tree oil, perilla seed extract, Dental Herb Company, Tom’s of Maine, and Rembrandt Natural products described. Medical concerns about herbals including Echinacea, St. John’s Wort, gingko biloba, kava-kava and ginseng discussed; herbs that cause bleeding, and phytoestrogens as substitute for Premarin described. Alternative agents including chondroitin/glucosamine/MSM, SAM-e and omega 3 fatty acids will be discussed.
For nutraceuticals, foods and their medical uses will be described including cranberries and UTIs, fish oils and heart health, anti-oxidants and prevention of macular degeneration, blueberries and Alzheimer’s, broccoli sprouts and reduction of gastric cancers, curcumin and cystic fibrosis, and more. Finally foods and their dental uses will be described including Dr. Weil’s cocktail for periodontal problems, tomatoes and CHF risk in periodontal patients, vitamin D and the prevention of tooth loss, and more.

Course Objectives - As a result of attending this course, the participant should be able to:
- List the new dental drugs and dental herbal products with their proven effectiveness and ineffectiveness.
- Describe the concept of free radicals and anti-oxidants and review their uses in medical and dental conditions.
- Outline those medical and dental conditions in which nutraceuticals have been shown to be effective and those not effective.
- List the key considerations in treating the patient on antiplatelet therapy.
- Describe the most recent theory on the relationship between CRP, gingivitis and heart attacks.
- List the safety concerns by the medical profession about herbal use in patients and effects on surgery and recovery, including herbs that cause bleeding.
Instructor:
RICHARD L. WYNN is Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland's Dental School in Baltimore. He has served as a dental educator, researcher, and teacher of dental pharmacology and dental hygiene pharmacology for his entire professional career. He holds a BS degree in Pharmacy and is a registered pharmacist in the State of Maryland, an MS in physiology, and a PhD degree in pharmacology from the University of Maryland. Dr. Wynn chaired the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Maryland Dental School from 1980 to 1995. Previously he chaired the Department of Oral biology at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry.
Dr. Wynn has to his credit over 300 publications including original research articles, textbooks, book chapters, monographs, and articles in continuing education journals. He has over 500 continuing education seminars to dental professionals in the US, Canada, Mexico and Europe. Dr. Wynn has been a consultant to the drug industry for 25 years and his research laboratories have contributed to the development of new analgesics and anesthetics. He is a consultant to the US Pharmacopeia, Dental Drugs and Products section, The Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association and a former consultant to the Council of Dental Education, Commission on Accreditation. He is a featured columnist and his drug review articles entitled "Pharmacology Today" appear in each issue of the journal General Dentistry, published by the Academy of General Dentistry. He is the lead author of Drug Information Handbook for Dentistry, now in its 10th edition. One of his primary interests is keeping dental professionals informed on all aspects of drug use in dental practice.
