Section VI. Other Titles and Appointments

  1. Introduction: Appointments and promotions related to this section are not reviewed by the APT Committee. They are reviewed and approved by the Dean, the Provost, and the Board of Regents. Except for full-time Lecturer and a regular academic joint appointment, persons appointed to these ranks do not have voting privileges in the University Faculty (Handbook, Vol. II, Chapter 21, Section 21-32). Lecturers who have appointments of 50% and above are voting members of the School of Dentistry Faculty (Code of Organization and Procedures for the Faculty, Article I, Section 1, b).
    1. Lecturer and Senior Lecturer (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): These titles are conferred upon an individual who has special capabilities or a special instructional role. Appointments as Lecturer are annual or shorter and the question of their renewal shall be considered each year by the faculty of the department in which they are held. It may be used for individuals who may enter the tenure track at a future time. For additional reference, see Handbook, Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-41.
    2. Affiliate Appointments (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): An affiliate title
requires qualifications comparable to those required for appointment to the corresponding rank of other titles. It recognizes the professional contributions of the individual whose principal employment responsibilities lie outside the colleges or schools of the University, with a nonacademic unit of the University, or who is in private practice.
Affiliate faculty make substantial contributions to University programs through their expertise, interest, and motivation to work with the faculty in preparing and assisting with the instruction of students in practicum settings.
Affiliate appointments are annual; the question of their renewal shall be considered each year by the faculty of the department in which they are held. Those voting faculty members of superior rank in the involved department are eligible to vote on the promotion of affiliate faculty. Affiliate appointments and promotions are not reviewed by the APT Committee.
      1. Affiliate Instructor: For the rank of Affiliate Instructor, a candidate must possess a dental degree or credentials appropriate to the duties performed. In addition, the appointee would be an active participant in departmental work such as assisting regular teaching faculty in the clinical aspects of course instruction. This is the most commonly used initial appointment level.
      2. Affiliate Assistant Professor: Requires training or experience, plus regular or exceptional contributions, as above. Such regular contribution should have been sustained for at least three (3) years. This is the typical entry level for individuals with a graduate degree and less than three (3) years' experience. Usual time in rank as Affiliate Assistant Professor is three (3) to seven (7) years.
      3. Affiliate Associate Professor: Requires above qualifications and is reserved for those who continue to make regular, exceptional contributions to the departmental activities over a prolonged period of time. Scholarly contributions to the literature will be considered, but are not required. Participation in outside activities such as study clubs, dental societies, and continuing dental education, will also be considered. Usual time in rank as an Affiliate Associate Professor is five (5) to fifteen (15) years.
      4. Affiliate Professor: Requires outstanding, mature scholarship, as evidenced by
accomplishments in clinical teaching, related professional activities (e.g., mentor of a study club, CDE teaching, leadership in local, state, or national dental societies, etc.), and the consideration of scholarly contribution to the literature. This appointment should be based on national recognition in her/his area of specialization and requires exceptional contributions to teaching and related professional and scholarly activities within the department over a long period of time.
Promotions in these ranks require the following:
        • A current curriculum vitae of the candidate.
        • Documentation from the faculty which fully describes and assesses the candidate's
teaching and, if any, research involvement.
        • A letter from the Department Chair detailing the faculty vote, the contribution of the
candidate to the departmental program, and an explanation of why promotion in rank is
justified. Years of service alone do not justify promotion.
    3. Affiliate in Dental Practice: Reserved for those practitioners who accept and supervise
students in off-campus clinical settings. The criteria for appointment to this rank are the same as those for Clinical Instructor.
    4. Visiting Appointments
      1. Visiting Faculty (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): Appointment to one of the ranks with a visiting title indicates that the appointee holds a Professorial position at the same academic level at another institution of higher learning and is temporarily employed at the University. A visitor who is otherwise qualified may be designated as a Visiting Lecturer.
      2. Visiting Scholar: The visiting scholar title is an honorary title awarded to persons who hold professional (including research titles) positions at other institutions and who are visiting the University, but who are usually not employed by the University during their stay. The purpose of this title is recognition of the visitor's presence at the University, and to make University facilities and privileges available. See Academic HR web site for required letter of offer and Provost approval.

      http://www.washington.edu/admin/acadpers/procedures/visitingScholarsOfferLetter.html

Once the paperwork has been submitted for the appointment of these visitors, the
Chairperson of the appointing department is asked to make the following information
available to the other departments within the School and to the Director of Research:

      1. the interest and expertise of the visiting scholar, and
      2. the specific goals of the visiting scholar, i.e. reasons for the leave from the home institution.
    5. Emeritus (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): A title recommended by
departmental action for a retired faculty member (including research and clinical faculty) whose
scholarly, teaching and service record is meritorious. Such a recommendation requires approval
by the Dean and the President of the University. The normal criteria for appointment to the
Emeritus faculty are ten (10) years of prior full-time service as a member of the faculty and
achievement of one of the two major teaching ranks; Professor or Associate Professor. Under
certain circumstances, the President may grant emeritus status to a retiring administrator at the
level of Dean or Vice President or at other levels if deemed appropriate.
    6. Adjunct (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): An adjunct appointment is made only
to a faculty member (including one in a Research Professorial rank) already holding a primary
appointment in another department. This title recognizes the contributions of a member of the
faculty to a secondary department. Adjunct appointments do not confer governance or voting
      privileges or eligibility for tenure in the secondary department. These appointments are annual;
the question of their renewal shall be considered each year by the faculty of the secondary
      department.
    7. Joint (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): A joint appointment recognizes a faculty
member's long-term commitment to, and participation in, two or more departments. A joint
appointment may be discontinued only with the concurrence of the faculty member and the
appointing departments. One department shall be designated the primary department and the
others secondary, and this designation can be changed only with the concurrence of the faculty
member and the appointing departments. Personnel determinations (salaries, promotions, leave,
etc.) originate with the primary department(s), and all actions must have the concurrence of the
      secondary department(s).
    8. Teaching Associate (Handbook: Vol. II, Chapter 24, Section 24-34): Appointment with the
title of teaching associate is made to a non-student with credentials more limited than those
required of an Acting Instructor. Teaching associate appointments are annual, or shorter, and the
question of their renewal shall be considered each year by the faculty of the department in which
      they are held
