Wendy Mouradian

Wendy E. Mouradian, MD, MS

Wendy Mouradian, MD, MS, is Director, Regional Initiatives in Dental Education (RIDE) and Associate Dean for Regional Affairs in the School of Dentistry. She is also a Professor in Pediatric Dentistry, and Clinical Professor in Pediatrics, School of Medicine. Dr. Mouradian’s interest in community-based education grew out of her pediatrics residency with the UW School of Medicine where she spent time in Montana and the Olympic Peninsula as part of the WWAMI program. Dr Mouradian is a nationally-recognized leader in bringing attention to the importance of oral health to the medical community. She has been oral health consultant to the American Academy of Pediatrics, and now serves as co-chair of a new committee on oral-systemic curricula for medical and dental schools for the American Association of Medical Colleges and the American Dental Education Association. She is the director of the oral-systemic curriculum committee for the UW School of Medicine, and has initiated several inter-professional efforts to better integrate oral health into general medical education. From 1998-2001 Dr Mouradian worked at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at NIH organizing and chairing the Surgeon General’s Conference on Children and Oral Health in 2000. Previously, Dr. Mouradian was Director of the Craniofacial Program at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Mouradian’s research interests are in ethics and health policy related to children’s oral and craniofacial health, and the interface between medicine and dentistry.

Mary Fusco, MA

Outreach Manager for the School of Dentistry and RIDE. Mary Fusco was a dental assistant for 10 years before obtaining her degrees in communication. She has worked most recently at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, where she supported initiatives related to dental and overall health care of HIV patients in the State of Kansas.

Terry Kalet, MEd

RIDE Program Manager. Terry Kalet comes to us from the UW School of Medicine where she worked in the Office of the Dean as the Director for Curriculum Management. With a strong educational background, and keen interest in oral health, Terry is part of the “glue” between Medicine and Dentistry in launching the new RIDE program.

Dr Richard McCoy

Richard McCoy, DDS, MSD

RIDE Team

Dick McCoy brings more than 30 years of professional experience to the RIDE team. As the former chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Washington, Dr. McCoy has cumulative faculty experience from Northwestern University School of Dentistry and the Naval Dental School in Bethesday. He is a native of Eastern Washington, and has a Master’s Degree in Applied Gnathology from Loma Linda University. He has developed a special interest in helping to meet the dental needs of rural communities. Having taught many of the major first-year dental courses, Dr. McCoy also brings to our team a depth of knowledge, team player mentality and personal commitment to the creation of the new Regional Initiative in Dental Education.

Colleen McKay

Colleen McKay, BA, BFA

Administrator

Colleen McKay, is the Administrator of the RIDE program at the University of Washington. An experienced administrator in the School of Dentistry for 28 years, Colleen was administrator of the Department of Periodontics for eight years, and previously, the administrator of the Department of Oral Biology for 19 years. She has extensive experience managing major grants and contracts and personnel.

David Pitts

David L. Pitts, DDS, MSD

RIDE Team

An endodontist by training, Dr. Dave Pitts brings to the RIDE team a deep interest, and understanding of, technology and its possibilities for supporting education for students and community dentists. Dr. Pitts is currently Associate Professor and Director of the Predoctoral Endodontic Program in the Department of Endodontics at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He has served on the full-time faculty in the Department since 1977, and he maintained a one day/week private practice limited to endodontics in Bellevue, Washington for 27 years. In his role as a RIDE team member, Dr. Pitts will also be considering the potential of community-based training to support and enhance students’ experiences. Dr. Pitts currently serves on the Curriculum Committee. He is the School representative on the Council of Faculties of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and serves as a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Journal of Endodontics, and as an Editorial Advisor for Endodontic Practice.

 

Frank Roberts

Frank A. Roberts, DDS, PhD

RIDE Team

Dr. Frank Roberts is a basic science researcher, teacher, and clinician, bringing equally-important perspectives to the RIDE team. An Associate Professor and Pre-doctoral Program Director in the Periodontics Department at the University of Washington and Chief of Periodontics at the Seattle Veterans Administration Medical Center, Dr. Roberts’ research involves understanding the molecular mechanisms of chronic inflammatory disease progression, the bacterial pathogenesis of periodontitis, and biology and imaging of dental implants. As a member of the curriculum committee, Dr. Roberts represents the UW School of Dentistry and UW School of Medicine on all aspects of overlapping course work. As a member of the RIDE team, his role is pertinent with regard to the first year basic science and periodontics curriculum, overlap with the Spokane dental hygiene courses, and clinical periodontics experiences in the fourth year.
